- SPEAKER OF THE BRILLIANT DAWN
- Next order of business.
- YOUNGER ORCHID
- Sir, the people are concerned with the proper disposal
of art. Art disposed irresponsibly may wash up on far
shores where it cannot be appreciated and may in fact
be reviled. Mediocre art, though often biodegradable,
can produce toxic aesthetic emissions in the process.
- FIRST SCHEMER
- We are aware of this problem.
- YOUNGER ORCHID
- What do you propose to do?
- FIRST SCHEMER
- We would like to institute art recycling programs,
whereby used art may be processed to produce new art.
Our studies have shown that an average of seventy-eight
percent of the artistic content of a work may be salvaged
and resynthesized. In some cases, we have been able to
achieve nearly ninety percent aesthetic transfer by using
modern collage techniques--
- ELDER ORCHID
- Don't you mean "postmodern"?
- BURSTING STARFLOWER
- No need to get pedantic.
- SPEAKER OF THE BRILLIANT DAWN
- Please continue, Schemer.
- FIRST SCHEMER
- Thank you.--Our proposed process produces very little waste,
and the waste it does produce, while devoid of aesthetic
value, can itself be used as content in mass communication
or as infrastructural material for industrial hedonism.
- BURSTING STARFLOWER
- Can all forms of art be recycled as easily?
- FIRST SCHEMER
- Sorry, I don't have exact statistics on that, though the
head of our research division might.
- PURPLE-WINGED FLIGHT
- I don't have exact figures either, but preliminary research
indicates that nineteenth-century etchings and novels are
most easily disposed of in this fashion.
- YOUNGER ORCHID
- Could the resulting art itself be recycled?
- PURPLE-WINGED FLIGHT
- Yes, but the aesthetic quality would continue to go down by
the same ratio as before. Eventually, art with no redeeming
value whatsoever would be produced.
- YOUNGER ORCHID
- However, bad art may be less of an environmental hazard than
good art.
- FIRST SCHEMER
- We hadn't considered that.
- SPEAKER OF THE BRILLIANT DAWN
- It is nearly time to adjourn. I suggest that we all consider
the Younger Orchid's point more fully before tomorrow's session,
and I move to adjourn.
- SPEAKER OF THE GLITTERING DUSK
- All those in favor say "aye." ... All those opposed say "nay." ...
Session adjourned.
